Deborah Harry! Punk Icon, New Jersey Native

Debbie Harry, front woman for the ground breaking band ‘Blondie’, was born on July 1st, 1945 and adopted into a family from Hawthorne, NJ where she was raised. She graduated from Hawthorne High School in 1963 and then attended Centenary College in Hackettstown, NJ where she graduated with an Associate of Arts degree.
Moving to New York City in the late 1960’s, Harry worked as a model, a dancer and a Playboy Bunny before co-forming Blondie in 1974. Their debut album was released in 1976 and quickly became a hit.

Regulars at Max’s Kansas City and the iconic CBGB’s in Manhattan, Debbie Harry was sought after by fashion houses and artists like Andy Warhol who immortalized her beauty and unique fashion sense in their art.

We will have to feature her on our feminist International Women’s History Month features. She was always a style icon of mine, another Jersey Grrrrl I thought was from New York!
