15 applications of GIS, can you think of more?!

In NYC we have “Crash Mapper” which lets you know where bike crashes are or where pedestrians have been injured or killed. I use it to plan bike rides so that I can avoid danger. During my visit to Austin I biked, mostly on seperated bike lanes away from car traffic but there were times I had to mingle with road traffic it would have been nice to know which streets were calmer.

I’ve had an idea like this. In my mind the working title for the app is “Haunted” where the ghosts of crashes and other violence are part of the map. The wayfinding algorithm accounts for time, distance, energy, and risk.

But I usually pause the idea when I think about this app causing a negative feedback where poor neighborhoods with bad infrastructure have high risk get even less business.

Good idea, but also good thinking about the consequences.

You should do a GIS map for where are free public restrooms in the city. American cities are awful about this. When in doubt one can always find one in a library or supermarket.

Creating a directory of property owners who own the apartment buildings. Figure out where they’re located, where their investments are located, etc. Link the properties to the trusts or shell companies, and then back to the owners.

I love all these ideas. There needs to be a Zine!

Whenever I think of GIS as a tool, I start to feel like being invisible is safer. Evading GIS is safer.

I feel like GIS is in the hands of people who don’t care about me.
