This is deliberate. At the core of the anti-vaxxers is the hope that disease will kill non white people, especially in cities where they have mass political power. Where does disease kill humans in large numbers? The cities. Why? The “R0 is an estimate of contagiousness that is a function of human behavior and biological characteristics of pathogens.” And if fewer unvaccinated individuals are in closer proximity, the virus will spread. If you read the article carefully, the authors state that vaccination DOESN’T effect the R0 but the R. I argue that they undercut that with the statement I quoted. “R0 is an estimate of contagiousness that is a function of human behavior.” And vaccination ties into that aspect of human behavior.

This is why I’m so happy that we have biologists with PhDs in this space. As you know journalists interpret what others tell us, we aren’t always an expert on a topic.
