Ideas for a more inclusive and prosocial urbanism

We’re crowdsourcing ideas on a better urbanism/planning. If you could share some of yours that would be great.

I haven’t thought too much about it, but a disability-centered housing and planning policy would be nice. Like, is there a way to eminent domain the ground floor of apartment buildings, so there will be a huge surplus of wheelchair accessible apartments?

The owner would still own the land and the building, but the ground floor units would be communized. The state or county would pay a fixed rent to the “owner”, and manage the units. Ramps and lifts would be paid for.

Modifications to the urban area to support people with limited or no vision would be installed. Services to shuttle people to (nearby) healthcare would be designed and implemented.

If we run out of apartments in the area, then we start going for the houses near the clinics and hospitals.

We could start creating actual jobs for people with mental disabilities that could help them, and everyone. Why are they toiling at McDonalds when they could be toiling a little bit less and cooking healthier-for-us food for everyone at a communal restaurant-mess-hall.

Imagine how much less toxic a restaurant would be if it weren’t about making a ton of money and feeding affluent people. You wouldn’t have Anthony Bourdain getting loaded all the time, and then killing himself, because he’d be in an industry that cared about people.

I feel that urban housing should be senior and disabled centric. We will all get old one day if we are lucky and disabled people being in urban centers allows them to be near best medical facilities, friends, and easier for family to visit…
I wonder is there a sub genre of disability urbanism?!

I’m assuming you mean subgenre - I don’t know, but the ADA was one of the most transformative laws. All the curb cuts!

The Sun Genre, to me, are pyramids. Pyramids cast less shadow, and look cooler than towers, and also don’t get as tall as towers. They allow us to be solar people.
